Lactoferrin is a protein that has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, lactoferrin chelates iron ions, thanks to which it also acts as a regulator of iron absorption, especially in newborns and small children. In the youngest children, the intestinal walls are characterized by high permeability, thanks to which lactoferrin can be delivered to the body and activate its multidirectional activity.

Properties of lactoferrin:

  • Antimicrobial effect - the ability of lactoferrin to bind iron reduces the manipulation and reproductive capabilities of bacteria that need it for proliferation;
  • Stimulates the immune system - it stimulates immune functions, both innate and adaptive;
  • Fights cancer - numerous studies have noted the significant potential of lactoferrin to fight cancer, lowering the level of iron, which is so important for the proliferation and maturation of cancer cells;
  • It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties - thanks to immune modulation and regulation of products originating from the body's inflammatory or infectious response, it reduces the formation of free radicals.

Lactoferrin is a protein naturally found in human and cow milk, tears, saliva, semen and mucus. The largest amounts of it are found in colostrum (Latin: colostrum ), i.e. initial mother's milk. It is believed to have a broad spectrum of action. Lactoferrin has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It prevents infections and supports the treatment of existing ones. It is used to support the pharmacotherapy of peptic ulcer disease, alleviate acne symptoms and restore normal intestinal microflora.

When to use Lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is considered safe and can be used in infants and small children. It is in newborns and the youngest children that lactoferrin is most effective. Preparations with lactoferrin are indicated for use in states of reduced immunity and infectious diseases. They reduce the risk of bacterial, viral and fungal diseases. Lactoferrin supplementation is recommended during antibiotic therapy during Helicobacter pylori infection (bacteria causing gastric and duodenal ulcers). The use of lactoferrin is also recommended when suffering from hepatitis C, because it can reduce the multiplication of the HCV virus that causes the disease. Protein supports the regeneration of intestinal microflora, which in turn supports the body's proper immune response. There are reports of a beneficial effect of lactoferrin supplementation on the treatment of acne , therefore its use is recommended for this condition. Additionally, lactoferrin can be taken in iron metabolism disorders.
