Folic acid, like other B vitamins, plays a number of important roles in the body. It is worth remembering that this is not an important ingredient only in the diet of a future mother, but important for everyone. Such functions as neurotransmission, homocysteine metabolism and red blood cell synthesis are just some of the areas in which folic acid plays an important role. What else does vitamin B9 affect and in what processes does it participate?

Folic acid takes part in the synthesis of nucleotides used in the production of DNA. The matrix for the growth and functioning of all cells and tissues in the body. Therefore, an improper level of vitamin B9 can affect the development of some types of cancer.

Like other B vitamins (B6 and B12), vitamin B9 also lowers the level of homocysteine in the blood, allowing it to be converted to methionine. High levels of homocysteine in the body cause damage to blood vessels and increase the level of bad cholesterol in the blood. This leads to the development of atherosclerosis and, consequently, to myocardial infarction.

An important component for spermatogenesis is folic acid. Deficiency of this vitamin also causes fertility disorders in women. Problems with getting pregnant may affect women who have mutations in the genes responsible for methylation of folic acid.

Too low a concentration of vitamin B9 in the blood leads to the development of anemia caused by disorders of red blood cell maturation. The results of morphology then indicate not only a low level of hemoglobin but also an increased mean erythrocyte volume (increased MCV) and moderate thrombocytopenia.

One of the components involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters is folic acid . The action of vitamin B9 is related to the metabolism of homocysteine and its conversion to S-adenosine methionine. Its deficiency occurs in people with Alzheimer's disease and depression.

Vitamin B9 is an extremely important ingredient at the beginning of a fetus's life. It takes part in the formation of the neural tube. It is based on this structure that the brain and spinal cord of the child develop. It develops between the 2nd and 4th week of pregnancy. Vitamin B9 supplementation in women of reproductive age significantly reduces serious fetal development disorders, such as anencephaly and spina bifida. That is why the Polish Gynecological Society emphasizes the supplementation of this ingredient in the diet of basically all women of reproductive age. Pregnancy is a period when the amount of folates supplied in the diet will not be sufficient.

Also later in pregnancy, it is an essential ingredient for the proper development of the baby.
